Background of the study
Forested areas, due to their dense vegetation and remote locations, often present challenges in the recovery and identification of skeletal remains. In Ede North Local Government Area, Osun State, skeletal remains found in forests have raised concerns regarding both criminal activities and unresolved historical cases. Forensic anthropology plays a crucial role in these scenarios by utilizing techniques such as osteological analysis, DNA profiling, and radiographic imaging to establish identities and reconstruct events (Akinola, 2023). Recent advancements in technology have improved the precision of forensic investigations; however, challenges such as environmental degradation, limited access, and inadequate resources continue to hinder effective identification (Folorunso, 2024). This study assesses the role of forensic anthropology in cases of skeletal remains found in forests, aiming to evaluate current methodologies and identify key challenges. By integrating forensic evidence with environmental assessments and historical data, the research seeks to enhance victim identification processes, support legal investigations, and contribute to historical and criminal justice. The study will utilize field surveys, laboratory analyses, and historical reviews to develop a comprehensive framework for forensic investigations in forested environments. It will compare local practices with international standards to recommend effective improvements ultimately ensuring justice, clarity.

Statement of the problem
The recovery and identification of skeletal remains in forested areas of Ede North are hindered by environmental degradation, limited access, and inadequate forensic resources (Akinola, 2023; Folorunso, 2024). These challenges delay the identification process and complicate legal investigations, resulting in unresolved cases and compromised justice. Traditional forensic methods may not fully address the complexities of remains found in dense forests. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating current forensic practices and proposing strategic improvements to enhance identification accuracy and support effective legal proceedings. Prompt solutions are urgently needed.

Objectives of the study:

  • To evaluate current forensic methodologies in identifying skeletal remains in forested areas.

  • To identify challenges affecting victim identification in forest recovery operations.

  • To propose strategic improvements for enhancing forensic identification accuracy.

Research questions:

  • What forensic techniques are used to identify skeletal remains in forested areas?

  • What challenges hinder accurate identification of remains in dense forests?

  • How can forensic methodologies be improved to support legal investigations in forested regions?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Advanced forensic techniques significantly improve identification accuracy in forested environments.

  • H2: Environmental degradation and limited access negatively impact forensic investigations.

  • H3: Strategic improvements in forensic practices will enhance legal outcomes and case resolutions.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the role of forensic anthropology in identifying skeletal remains found in forested areas. The research aims to improve forensic methodologies, support legal investigations, and provide closure for affected families. Findings are expected to inform policy reforms, enhance forensic training, and ultimately contribute to more effective recovery operations and justice in cases involving remains from dense forest regions.

Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of terms:

  • Forested Areas: Regions covered by dense vegetation and trees.

  • Skeletal Remains: Human bones and associated tissues recovered for forensic analysis.

  • Radiographic Imaging: The use of imaging techniques to visualize internal bone structures.
